Sudbury mining supplier recognized for education efforts

A Sudbury mine supplier has been recognized by the local college for its contributions to the educational efforts of postsecondary students.

Ionic Mechatronics, which specializes in automation and robotics for mining and other industries, has been named an Employer of Distinction by Cambrian College.

The accolade acknowledges an employer that has “demonstrated exemplary support for Cambrian students and graduates.”

Renée Scott, Cambrian’s director of student success, called Ionic a “valued partner” of the college.

“(President) André Dumais and his team have shown so much support for our students and graduates. The company stands out as a community leader and its dedication to the Greater Sudbury community and the college are unparalleled,” Scott said in a Feb. 25 news release.

“Under those principles and its leadership, Ionic has quickly become one of the choice employers that are pursuing our graduates for an amazing first job and an excellent first step in a rewarding career.”

Ionic contributes in a number of ways to enriching postsecondary education for Cambrian students.

Operations manager François Nzotungwanimana serves as chair of an advisory committee that helps shape the scope of the programming offered at Cambrian, coordinating and organizing feedback provided by industry.

Ionic also brings on students to assist in implementing applied research projects, and has often hired Cambrian graduates for positions in the company.

Dumais called the award a “great honour.”

“Any time that the work you put into a company gets recognized by any organization is spectacular. But the fact that this is Cambrian College, a highly respected organization, it means a little bit more,” Dumais said.

“We have a great relationship with Cambrian. Their students and graduates are hardworking, and it’s fantastic to work with the college’s research and development arm. It’s a strong selling point for our business.”

This is the third year Cambrian College has recognized a leading company with its Employer Award of Distinction. Previous winners have included Hard Line Solutions (2020), which specializes in mine automation and remote-control technology, and BESTECH (2019), a multi-disciplinary engineering services firm.

Both are prominent companies operating in Sudbury’s mining service and supply sector.
